What Every Parent Should Know! Protect Your Teens Tour with Diane Griffin - Interview & Giveaway

Welcome Diane, I'm so glad you could stop in today. We're touching on a very serious subject, Protecting Your Teens Online, and I know so many parents are going to love your tour to learn more about this much needed information. Diane is currently on tour with the Virtual Book Tour Cafe', and you can follow her tour HERE for more information and to enter her contest (details below).

WI:  Why did you choose to breach this subject?
DG: As a security expert, I deal with a wide variety of growing trends of activities that have the potential for harmful consequences to businesses and people. A few Close friends of mine have teenagers and I was troubled by their behaviors on social networks and texting while driving.  I wrote the book so that my friends would have a better understanding what teenagers are doing on these social media sites, and then I thought to myself; that this information should be shared to ALL parents of teenagers. Parents that have teens active on social Media Sites, and don’t want to read 100+ pages of info on Facebook or find some of the techno-terms and lingo online confusing. Even if you have a Facebook profile and connect with people from time to time there, you will find this book helpful. I wrote this as an informative, easy-read, quick-answer guide so you can take action to protect your teens (and you) on Facebook now.

WI:  Tell us a bit of what people can expect from these books.
DG: In the Social Media book, I discuss the critical elements you and your college bound teens must consider regarding social networking and media if you want them to have an advantage for getting accepted, getting scholarships and ultimately an advantage for being desirable to employers in an already very difficult job market. In other words, helping you give them the better that you want them to have.

I am not here to tell you how you must parent your child. I am here to provide you with important issues to consider so you can make the best decisions possible for you and your teens in keeping a positive and healthy relationship as it relates to their online activities and specifically Facebook

WI:  What is the most common mistake parents make when it comes to protecting our teens online?
DG: While there are many benefits today to the ways we have of staying connected, it creates opportunities for many other people whom we don’t know to connect with us and our teens. This gives strangers access to information about … where we live, where we were born, who our friends are, what our “likes” are … you name it.

WI:  In your experience, what is the number one mistake teens make when socializing online?
DG: Not fully understand that you should not post anything online you wouldn’t expect the whole world to see and not understanding that there is no such thing as privacy on the internet

WI:  What can parents do to protect their teens, especially if they're going off to college?
DG: Identity Theft is high among teens going off to college, parents can teach kids about how to handle credit cards & bank accounts.  Also, how to protect personal identifiable information online, i.e. bank accounts & credit card numbers.

WI:  Facebook is huge. What should parents do when their child signs up for Facebook?
DG: Go with your gut. If something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t. If you don’t feel right about what someone is asking you to do, walk away.

WI:  What are the statistics for children either being abducted or murdered from socializing online?
DG:  The Counterintelligence and Cyber Divisions, Los Angeles FBI field office started keeping statistics in 1996, and we opened 113 cases that year. Through fiscal year 2007, opened 20,200 cases and arrested almost 10,000 subjects for sexually exploiting children online. So it's a crime problem that has grown exponentially over the years and continues to grow every year.

WI:  What should be the first thing parents should do when first allowing their children to have access to technology?
DG: Parents should monitor what their kids do with technology, they should be the first line of defense -Know their online friends. – Ask for their passwords, discuss the dangers of social media

WI:  What is the biggest danger of cell phones?
DG: Never-Ending Interruptions, Distracted Drivers, Negative Impact on Personal Contact, Health Effects, a very expensive hobby

WI:  Where can readers find you:
DG: Reader can contact me on website site;   or 866-661-5211  or

WI:  Where can readers purchase your books?
DG: The can purchase the book from the web site:

WI:  Anything else you'd like to share today?
DG: With the knowledge that one would gain from the books,  I am hoping that you can make better informed decisions about what social Media activities you are comfortable with your teen actively participating on. Now you know the positives of social media, the potential risks and what you can do about them. While in some cases, it may be best for you to have your teens wait until they mature more before they are exposed to this massive social network. And for others, you can create a better bond between you by actively participate in how your teens set up their profiles and how they engage with the apps and people in this community.

Diane I love all of your advice. The books have been getting great reviews and I am looking forward to reading them. Thank you so much for chatting with me today. I believe it is much needed information.
